Questions we get asked most
Buyers abroad and importers in Addis ask different things, so both sets are below, with the questions about working with us at the end. If yours is not here, the phone is faster than the form.
Buying Ethiopian commodities
What do you export, and where is it grown?
Sesame seed in Humera and Wollega types, niger seed (noug) from Gondar and Wollega, soya bean from Amhara, Oromia and Benishangul-Gumuz, and red kidney beans in Gojam and South Ethiopian types.
We buy in those regions ourselves, from farmers directly, through contract farming and on the ECX, which is why we can tell you what a crop will actually meet instead of passing the question along.
Can you meet a specific grade or specification?
Yes. While ECX sets the standard, buyers operate to varying specifications. Accordingly, we quote against your requirements rather than a house grade. Provide your target purity, moisture, and oil-content figures, and we will confirm what the current crop can achieve prior to your commitment.
Goods are then cleaned and graded to that specification and inspected against it before loading. A shipment that fails the specification does not travel.
What is your minimum order?
It depends on the commodity and the destination, and a number that turns out not to apply to your route is worse than no number at all. Tell us the commodity, the tonnage you have in mind and the destination port, and we will say plainly whether it is workable.
Which port do you load at?
Djibouti. Inland movement from the growing region, handling and storage at the dry port, and the loading itself are arranged by us and already inside the figure we quote.
What documentation comes with a shipment?
Bill of lading, certificate of origin, packing list, and whichever phytosanitary or regulatory certificates the commodity and the destination require.
The paperwork is handed over complete. It does not follow on afterwards, because a shipment without its documents is a shipment you cannot clear.
Importing into Ethiopia
What does “landed cost, not ex-works” actually mean?
An ex-works price covers the goods at the factory gate and nothing else. Inland freight, ocean freight, insurance, duty, clearance and delivery all arrive later, as separate invoices, after you have already committed.
Our figure covers all of it: goods, freight, insurance, duty and taxes, customs clearance, documentation and delivery to you. The number quoted is the number paid.
Do you handle customs clearance and duty?
Yes. We assess and settle duty and taxes, and we complete the customs formalities. The duty is calculated when we quote rather than discovered when the goods arrive, which is the point at which an import usually goes over budget.
What can you import?
Vehicles, including BYD electric models; medical equipment and human medicine; elevators and escalators; building glass; industrial chemicals; plastic raw materials; solar lanterns; and stationery and office supplies.
If what you need is not on that list, ask anyway. The process does not change with the goods.
How long does an import take?
Lead time depends on the manufacturer, the goods, and any regulatory permits the item needs before it can enter the country. We quote it alongside the price, so you have a date as well as a figure before you decide.
Can I test drive a BYD before ordering?
Yes. Use the test drive and price quote form and tell us the model. We will arrange the drive and come back with a landed-cost figure covering the vehicle, freight, duty and clearance.
Working with us
What do you need from me to quote?
Four things: what the goods are, to what grade or specification, how much of it, and where it has to get to. For a vehicle, the model and trim instead of a grade.
With those we can come back with availability, lead time and a landed cost. Without them we can only come back with more questions.
How does a shipment run, start to finish?
Five steps, the same in both directions: specification, quotation, sourcing, freight, then clearance and delivery.
You deal with one point of contact across all five, rather than a different desk at every stage.
How do I get a quotation?
Through the enquiry form or by phone on +251 91 261 02 48. If it is urgent, call. The phone is faster than the form.
Are you registered and regulated?
We operate under the Ethiopian Customs and Revenue Authority and the Ministry of Revenue, bank within the National Bank of Ethiopia’s foreign exchange framework, and are associated with EPOSPEA, the Ethiopian Pulses, Oilseeds and Spices Processors Exporters Association.
What languages do you work in?
English and Amharic, for correspondence and for documentation.
